Status Quo Breaker
In December, the Status Quo Breaker traveling trophy will begin. The traveling trophy will be the Don't Break the Ice game. It is an employee to employee recognition for their contribution to process improvement, to say thank you for being Lean and/or for helping make Des Moines Public Schools Leaner. Examples of how the Status Quo Breaker may be given to someone would be setting in motion a process improvement project, challenging the way things are always done, or leading a process improvement. The recognition will move monthly and the employee will be spotlighted in this newsletter. Find out more here. |
Lean Results Calculator
A calculator is being created to translate time savings into cost savings. This tool will be beneficial in the planning of a project to determine if the cost savings is worth the investment of time to complete the process improvement. Further, the tool will help everyone quickly determine cost savings of a project during the check and act phase of the process improvement. Once the calculator is fully developed, it will be shared out.

Time for a 5S?
Is the chaos of work and life catching up with you? Feeling unorganized? As the end of the 2017 year approaches, it brings with it a great opportunity to take time to 5S. 5S is a Lean tool to help declutter and organize. First, sort out the unnecessary and only keep the value added necessary items and information. Second, set it in order by giving a specific place for all things with easy accessibility. Third, make your space shine by giving it an early spring cleaning. Forth, create a standard for yourself to help make this a habit and incorporate the first three steps into your routine. Fifth, sustain your efforts and hard work reorganizing through the ongoing use of 5S. Need help? Contact Emma Knapp.

Facilities Warehouse 5S
The Facilities team is working to 5S the warehouse at Dean Avenue. Team members have been trained on 5S and the 8 wastes and have designed their ideal floor plan. This summer and fall they have been working as time allows to clear out the unnecessary. They have successfully completed one corner of warehouse and the results are dramatic! As the work continues, progress will be shared.
